"Win a Magazine Makeover from K9 Design Co."
Contest runs November 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010
The Contest Period
1. The "Win a Magazine Makeover" contest (the "Contest") is run by K9 Design Co. (the "Contest Sponsor and Administrator") and contest entries will be accepted from November 1, 2009 at 12:00:01 AM (ET) to January 31, 2010 at 11:59:59 PM (the "Contest Period").
Contest Group Entities
2. For the purposes of the Contest, the Contest Group Entities are K9 Design Co., together with its affiliates (including without limitation its contest prize sponsors), advertising and promotion agencies, suppliers of materials and services related to the Contest, the contest website www.magazinemakeover.ca and magazine advertisers, and any other corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship or other legal entity directly involved in the Contest (collectively, the "Contest Group Entities").
Eligibility
3. The Contest is open to all print magazines (trade, consumer, business-to-business, business to consumer, charity, custom) that are published in these provinces and territories in Canada: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Labrador, Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut. For greater clarity, ezines are not eligible to enter. English and French language publications are eligible, and the magazines are required to have a minimum of 80% Canadian content, and no limits on the circulation. The publisher or his/her designated representative submitting the entry must be the age of majority in his or her province or territory of residence, and must be authorized by the Publisher to submit an entry into this contest. Publishers may enter more than one magazine title; there is a limit of one contest entry per title.
There is no fee to enter the Magazine Makeover contest, and no purchase is required.
Publications entered may not portray any situation or activity that may be deemed illegal, offensive, dangerous or inappropriate; these entries will be disqualified. The decision to disqualify is at the discretion of the Contest Group Entities, and will occur without notice or communication to the entrant. The disqualification decision is final and not subject to review.
Methods of Entry
4. Publishers or their designated representative MUST submit their entries both online and by mail, as follows:
A. Online Entry: Entrants may register their entry online, at www.magazinemakeover.ca, by completing the online registration form in full, and uploading a file of the following images from a recent issue (published within the past twelve months) of their submitted magazine, in jpg or PDF format . Files must not exceed 5 MG total:
- Front cover
- Masthead page
- Table of Contents
- Two double page spreads of feature articles.
You may enter only one magazine title per entry. Multiple entries will be disqualified. Only one e-mail address may be used by any person or publisher to participate in the Contest. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of an entrant, the entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized holder of the e-mail address at the time of entry. For these purposes, the "authorized holder" is the natural person who is assigned to the submitted e-mail address by an Internet access or online service provider, or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.
B. Mail Entry: Submit one mailed entry per magazine title. The mailed entry must include the following components:
- One copy of the submitted magazine that best represents the spirit of the magazine
- A printed copy of the entry form
- A media kit or similar piece that describes their target market / demographic profile of their audience.
All entries must be received no later than January 31, 2010. Send the mailed entries to:

The contest panel of judges reserves the right to request additional issues of the magazine if they are required in the decision making process. K9 Design Co. will contact the publisher (or his designated representative) if additional issues are required.
The Judging
5. The judging for all contest entries received by January 31, 2010 will take place from February 1 to March 31, 2010, and will be conducted by an independent panel of judges who are experts in the publishing industry. Magazine entries will be judged based on several criteria including creativity, the use of type, the use of cover copy, the use of messaging throughout the magazine, the use of photography and illustrations, to name a few.
On March 31, 2010 a list of finalists will be announced.
On April 30, 2010 at 3:00:00 PM (ET), at the offices of K9 Design Co. in Toronto Ontario, the contest winner will be announced. The decision of the contest judges is final. No communication will be entered into except with the finalists or the contest winner.
The Grand Prize
6. There will be one Grand Prize awarded, valued at $19,700 CAD, and consisting of the following components:
i) A magazine makeover from K9 Design Co. Worth $8,000.00, CAD. www.k9designco.com K9 Design Co. is the only design and communications firm in Canada dedicated to magazines and publishers. The re-design will include:
One (1) discovery meeting; research into marketing initiatives; research into metrics provided; target audience; demographics; research into competitor publications.
Services to include 3 concepts showing the layout of major design elements and consultations with the editors/publisher to establish creative and workable design solutions for the publication.
One (1) chosen concept will receive two (2) sets of revisions with publisher feedback; Refine one (1) concept with publisher feedback presented.
Native files will be sent to publisher for their design team upon completion of re-design. The winning Publisher must agree to allow K9 Design to market the final design in future K9 marketing and promotional materials, in print, online or digital media.
ii)A Free Cover Consultation from Circ 3 Worth $500 CAD. www.circ3.com Circ 3, a leading circulation consultancy, with an impressive track record in helping clients achieve exponential growth in single copy sales, will provide the winner with a Free Cover Consultation on the issue of their choice...a $500 CAD value. Plus, the winner will be entitled to a 10% discount off the price of conducting a detailed Historical Cover Analysis.
iii)Print Credits Worth $5,000 CAD from IronStone Media www.ironstonemedia.com Spend a minimum of $7,000.00 per issue and we will give you 10% off each invoice to a maximum of $5,000.00. This discount can be used on one print job or can be spread out over several invoices. For clarity: if your print bill is $15,000 you will receive a $1,500.00 credit off your invoice. You are then entitled to print another 2 issues and receive a discount of $1,500.00 per issue based on a $15,000.00 invoice. Fine Print: The winner must fill out a credit application and be approved for credit or be subject to paying cash on receipt of files being submitted. The 10% discount is on printing and bindery and does not include mailing or postage.
iv)Printed Promotional Material Worth $1,000.00 CAD from Annex Printing www.annexprinting.ca for the new launch. This includes media kits (both print and pdf version), inserts, launch flyer or poster etc. The promotional materials will be based on the quoted value, and are at the discretion of Annex Printing. For greater clarity: If the printed materials are worth more than $1,000 CAD in production and print charges, then a $1,000 CAD credit will be applied, and the winner will be responsible for payment of the balance.
v)Stock photography Worth $200.00 CAD from i stock www.istockphoto.com, which includes 300 iStock credits. The winner will receive a credit bundle of 300 credits (each credit is worth $1.50 CAD). The winner will also receive a package of swag promotional items, including: a stainless steel water bottle, a hoodie, and some stickers.
vi)Digital Conversion Services Worth $5,000.00 CAD from Dawson Communications (NXT BOOK Media) www.dawsoncomm.com The winner will receive a $5,000 CAD credit towards any digital processing. It can be used all at once or over several invoices that total the prize amount. Credit Terms: The winner will fill out a credit application for approval. Payment terms are upon receipt of invoice if applicable.
Awarding the Prize: The winner will be contacted by phone by a representative of K9 Design Co. within ten (10) days of being judged as the winner. The winner must agree to accept the Grand Prize as awarded; Neither the Grand Prize nor any portion thereof is redeemable for cash or credit. Each component of the contest prize package will be awarded by the company sponsoring it, and will be arranged at a mutually agreed-upon time with that sponsor. If for any reason the Grand Prize winner is unable to accept the prize as awarded, the runner-up will be declared the winner.
To be declared a winner
7. To be declared a winner of the Grand Prize (a "Winner"), the selected entrant must, in addition to meeting the Contest eligibility criteria and otherwise complying with the official Contest rules, first:
- Be reached by telephone by the Sponsor or its representatives within the ten (10) days immediately following the selection of the entry;
- Complete and sign the Sponsor’s form of declaration and release and return it to the Sponsor or its representatives at the address indicated on the declaration and release form within fourteen (14) days following its delivery by the Sponsor or its representatives.
- Answer, un-aided by mechanical means, a mathematical skill-testing question.
- Disqualification: If any one of the above mentioned conditions is not met, the selected entrant will be disqualified and shall not be entitled to receive any prizes. The Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to select another eligible entrant as a potential prize winner.
General Terms and Conditions
8. Verification of Entries: The validity of any Contest entry is subject to verification by the Sponsor. Any incomplete or fraudulent entries will be rejected. Any entrant or other individual who enters or attempts to enter the Contest in a manner which is contrary to these official Contest Rules or which is otherwise disruptive to the proper operation of the Contest or by its nature is unjust to other entrants or potential entrants will be rejected and that entrant or purported entrant will be disqualified. All decisions of the Contest judges, who may be employees or independent contractors of the Sponsor and Contest Administrator, with respect to any and all aspects of the Contest, including without limitation the eligibility or disqualification of entrants or entries, are final and binding without right of appeal.
9. The Odds: The odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible magazine entries received.
10. For Residents of Quebec: Any litigation respecting the conduct and awarding of the prize in this contest may be submitted to la Regie des alcools, des courses et des jeux du Quebec only for the purpose of helping the parties reach a settlement. This Contest is void where prohibited, and is subject to all applicable Federal, Provincial and Municipal laws.
11. Acceptance of Prizes: All Prizes must be accepted as described in these rules and cannot be transferred to another individual, substituted for another prize or exchanged in whole or in part for money. If the winner wishes to implement one of the prize design concepts for the winning magazine, a quote for the implementation will be provided by K9 Design Co.
12. Substitution of the Grand Prize: The Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, and for any reason whatsoever, to substitute the Grand Prize or any part thereof, with a substitute prize of equivalent or greater value.
13. Other Termination of Contest: The Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to modify, cancel, terminate or suspend the Contest, in whole or in part, in the event of any cause or circumstance, including without limitation any virus, computer bug or unauthorized human intervention or any other cause that is beyond the control of the Sponsor, that could corrupt or affect the administration, security, impartiality or normal course of the Contest, with the approval of the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux in Quebec.
14. Release and Exclusion of Liability: By entering or attempting to enter the Contest, each entrant and/or purported entrant agrees: (i) to release, discharge, and forever hold harmless the Contest Group Entities, and their respective officers, directors, employees, shareholders, agents and other representatives (collectively, the "Releasees") from any and all claims, actions, damages, demands, manner of actions, causes of action, suits, debts, duties, accounts, bonds, covenants, warranties, indemnities, claims over, contracts and liabilities of whatever nature or kind arising out of, or in connection with the entrant’s participation or attempted participation in the Contest, compliance or non-compliance with these Contest rules and acceptance and use of the Grand Prize or any portion thereof; and (ii) if selected as a potential Prize winner, to sign the Sponsors’ form of declaration and release documentation in this regard before receiving the Grand Prize.
The Releasees will not be responsible for lost, incomplete, late or misdirected entries or for any failure of the Contest website during the Contest Period, or for any technical malfunction or other problems with, any telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment or software or for any technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination of the foregoing, and will not be liable for any resulting injury or damage to any person or property arising from, or relating to, that person’s or any other person’s participation or attempted participation in the Contest. Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws and, should such an attempt be made, the Sponsor reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution. (iii) The winner must sign a release form, giving the Contest Group Entities permission to publish in print, broadcast or online, the winner’s magazine title, magazine images, and the publisher’s name.
15. Name/Image of Winners: By entering the Contest, the winner agrees to abide by the Contest rules and authorizes the Sponsor and its advertising and promotional agencies and their respective employees or other representatives to broadcast, publish and otherwise use his or her name, photograph, image, statements regarding the Contest or any prize, place of residence and (or) voice for publicity purposes, without any form of remuneration, including without limitation, on any website operated by or on behalf of the Contest Sponsor.
16. Communication with Entrants: No communication or correspondence will be entered into with any Contest entrants, other than with selected finalists and/or the Grand Prize winner.
17. Personal Information: The personal information gathered about entrants in connection with this Contest will be used for the administration of this Contest, and may be shared with contest judges and sponsors for the purposes of this contest only.
